This is one of the most well-known waulking songs. Many versions of it were recorded for archive purposes, the most extensive of them in Barra, South Uist and Benbecula. The longer versions have some of the stock motifs of the older waulking songs, such as ‘the secret lover’; ‘the jealous mistress’; In Barra the song is associated with Clan Neill. This album version was put together under close consultation with our friend and tradition bearer Kenna Campbell. We feel very fortunate and privileged to work with her, and honoured that she has shared her knowledge with us for this recording.
